 [Weaving Tradition into Climate Action: A Collaborative Project Between an Indonesian Teacher and Gangjin High School]

I am Kaktus Takeama Sogen, a teacher from Indonesia. I’d like to share a special project I conducted with students at Gangjin High School in Korea—a project that blends traditional wisdom with climate action.

🌊 A Personal Encounter with Climate Change

I was born and raised on Solor Island, in eastern Indonesia. When I was a child, there was a wide sandy beach in front of my home, where we used to play football. But today, that beach is gone. Sea levels have risen so much that the sand has disappeared.
Thirty years ago, the sea was far from our house. Now, it is much closer. White cockatoos, once common on our island, are no longer seen. We have lost much of our biodiversity. Climate change is not a distant concept to me—I’ve lived it.

This crisis isn’t about politics. It’s about our shared responsibility. And as a teacher, I believe I must act—starting with local action. That’s why we launched a project titled:
“Integrating Indonesian and Korean Leaf and Bamboo Weaving Traditions to Create Eco-Friendly Bags.”

🧑‍🏫 A Teacher’s Response: Local Wisdom for Global Challenges

The aim of the project was to raise awareness about climate change and explore how traditional cultures can offer sustainable solutions. The students and I focused on plastic waste and carbon footprint reduction. Using natural materials and low-energy processes, we created eco-bags that reflect cultural heritage and environmental consciousness.

🍃 Where Culture Meets Sustainability and Creativity

Our journey began with discussions on global citizenship, climate change, and sustainable development (SDG 13). The students researched traditional weaving cultures of both countries and visited local museums—including the Jeollanam-do Agriculture Museum and Gwangju’s Bamboo Museum—to experience Korea’s rich traditions firsthand.

We discovered that Indonesia and Korea share surprisingly similar weaving patterns and motifs, revealing a shared cultural memory of sustainable living.
Using palm leaves, we began creating our eco-friendly bags. The students were enthusiastic and curious—they embraced new skills with creativity and care.

After making the bags, we discussed spreading awareness in our communities. The students brainstormed campaigns, and we produced a video showcasing the project, now available on my YouTube channel. 

🎥 Growth for Both Students and Teachers

This project changed me, too. Learning about Korea’s and Indonesia’s traditions gave me a new layer of cultural awareness. I grew as an interdisciplinary educator, blending culture, science, art, and global citizenship into a real-world experience.

I am deeply grateful to my colleague Mr. Swarles Yusuf Tandi, my mentor Mr. Kim Gill Hwan, and the energetic, talented students of Gangjin High School.
Together, we also developed a “Trilingual Corner” on my website, www.educroom.com, which provides language learning materials in Indonesian, Korean, and English. Using AI-generated worksheets, we hope to build bridges across cultures through language.

This project reminded us that even small actions, rooted in tradition, can lead to meaningful change for the future of our planet.

[전통을 엮어 기후위기에 응답하다: 인도네시아 교사와 강진고 학생들의 공동 프로젝트]

안녕하세요. 저는 인도네시아 출신의 교사 카크투스 타케아마 소겐입니다. 오늘은 제가 강진고등학교 학생들과 함께 진행한 기후위기 대응 프로젝트에 대해 소개하고자 합니다.

🌊 기후변화를 ‘경험’한 사람으로서 시작한 수업

저는 인도네시아 동부 솔로르 섬에서 나고 자랐습니다. 어릴 적 집 앞에는 동네 아이들이 축구를 하며 놀 수 있을 정도로 넓은 모래사장이 있었지만 지금 그 모래사장은 바다에 잠겼습니다. 해수면 상승은 제 어린시절 기억 속 풍경을 바꾸어 놓았습니다. 그리고 이제는 흰 앵무새 떼조차 더 이상 볼 수 없습니다. 기후변화로 인해 우리는 생물다양성을 점점 잃어가고 있습니다.

기후위기는 더 이상 정치적 논쟁거리가 아니라 우리가 함께 해결해야 할 실제적이고 시급한 과제입니다. 교사로서 저는 지역사회 안에서 실천 가능한 해결책을 함께 모색해야 한다고 생각합니다. 그리고 이번 프로젝트는 그 실천의 시작이었습니다.

🧑‍🏫교육자로서의 역할: 지역과 전통에서 답을 찾다

이번 활동의 핵심은 전통문화에 기반한 기후위기 대응이었습니다. 프로젝트 명은 “인도네시아와 한국의 잎과 대나무 공예 전통을 활용한 친환경 가방 만들기”입니다. 우리는 플라스틱 오염 문제에 대응하기 위한 실천 방안으로, 두 나라의 엮기 문화를 활용한 친환경 제품을 제작했습니다. 저에겐 이 프로젝트가 학생들에게 지속가능한 삶의 방식을 알리고 전통적 가치를 되새기는 기회이기도 했습니다.

🍃전통문화 + 지속가능성 + 창의성 = 통합적 배움

학생들과 함께 기후변화에 대한 토론과 더불어 전통문화가 어떻게 오늘날의 지속가능성 문제에 기여할 수 있을지를 이야기했습니다. 학생들은 인도네시아와 한국의 '엮기' 문화를 조사했고, 직접 전남농업박물관과 광주 대나무박물관, 김치박물관 등을 탐방하며 자료를 수집했습니다.
놀랍게도 양국의 공예 전통은 유사한 모양과 삶의 지혜를 공유하고 있었습니다.

그 후 우리는 야자수 잎을 활용한 친환경 가방을 직접 제작했습니다. 강진고 학생들은 새로운 기술을 배우는 데 적극적이고 열정적이었습니다. 이 활동은 단지 공예 수업이 아니라, SDGs(13번 기후행동), GCED(세계시민교육), 환경교육, 예술 디자인이 통합된 융합 교육의 장이었습니다.

마지막 단계로 학생들은 프로젝트를 평가하고, 학습한 내용을 지역사회에 어떻게 적용할 수 있을지 고민하며 캠페인 아이디어도 제시했습니다. 그리고 이 모든 과정을 담은 영상을 만들어 제 유튜브 채널에 업로드했습니다.

🎥 학습을 넘은 변화: 교사도, 학생도 함께 성장하다

프로젝트는 제게도 큰 변화였습니다. 저는 한국과 인도네시아의 문화유산을 통해 더 넓은 시야를 갖게 되었고, 예술과 과학, 사회가 실제 세계 속에서 연결될 수 있음을 확인했습니다. 학생들에게도 이 프로젝트는 디자인과 지속가능성을 삶 속에서 어떻게 연결할 수 있는지를 배우는 시간이었으며, 전통의 중요성과 문화유산에 대한 존중도 함께 길러졌습니다.

함께한 강진고 학생들, Swarles Yusuf Tandi 선생님, 김길환 선생님과의 협업은 잊지 못할 추억이 되었습니다.
우리는 이 외에도 인도네시아어·영어·한국어 3개국어 학습 자료를 공유하는 Trilingual Corner 웹페이지를 공동 개발하기도 했습니다. 인공지능을 활용해 만든 워크시트도 이 코너에 포함되어 있습니다.

이번 프로젝트는 작은 실천이지만, 전통을 토대로 지속가능한 미래를 만들어가는 가능성을 보여주는 소중한 경험이었습니다.
